Beauty Under the Dust, Justin's Introduction
I have been blessed to grow up in Hocking Hills, Ohio, a place where millions visit each year to witness its sandstone wonders carved by water erosion and the breathtaking deciduous forest that transforms into a patchwork quilt of red, orange, and gold each October.
Though opportunities for work and healthcare are limited here, I am proud to call it home. What many see as a retreat has been the very place that shaped me into someone known for being big-hearted, determined, hardworking, and yes—stubborn. (And let’s not forget the resting face that says it all.)
It was here that I endured and overcame struggles with trauma and addiction. I broke those cycles and was given countless chances to serve my community as a good neighbor.
It was also here that I learned an important truth: there is beauty under the dust. The scars we try to hide because they remind us of the past can become beacons of light for others in their darkest moments. That belief is why I started this blog.
Recently, I was hospitalized with autoimmune encephalitis—a condition where my immune system attacks my brain. Because of it, I can no longer do many of the things I love most: firefighting, driving, trail riding, hiking, and endless hours of woodworking. Yet I refuse to be defeated. While my dream of starting a garage-based business may be uncertain, my determination to share my skills, creativity, and life lessons remains unchanged.
Moving forward, this space isn’t about self-pity or “woe is me.” It’s about sharing my projects and the stories behind them—turning struggle into strength, scars into light, and brokenness into something useful and inspiring.
